Productivity Report Problem
I have an SQL database which i have setup correctly. To make this simple, ill say these are the columns that are in the database:
Product Code
Date Sold On
Quantity Sold
Now the product code may appear in several records as it can be sold on any day. Im trying to get the report to look through the database, pick out the info i need such as a specific product code on a certain day and show how many were sold on one line like this:
Stock Code : 01-01 Total Quantity Sold on Day : 26
At the moment i can only get the report to show like this:
Stock Code : 01-01 Quantity Sold : 10
Stock Code : 01-01 Quantity Sold : 5
Stock Code : 01-01 Quantity Sold : 11
Any help on this matter would be much appreciated.the best way to do so is to execute the query with group by expression..
i.e. group by date...
other than this..
create a group section by Date in ur eport..
and insert the summary fields of Quantity Sold etc..
with the name of Product also in group section
now the situation is that u have a detail section in which the detail is printed in form of product name, quantity sold etc..
and another section has same sort of value but summarized by date..
from the form.. create the option to suppress the detail section or to suppress the group section.. whethere u want to print detail report... or whether u want only summarize data by date
best of luck

Production server error
I have reports that have embedded code from a custom assembly.
In design, they work fine. When I deploy them and run them via the
Report Manager on production I get the following error in the cells
where I have this code running:
"Error in method xxxxxx - Request for the permission of type
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlClientPermission, System.Data,
Version=1.0.5000.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089
failed."
I have followed all previous articles, made changes to .config files,
etc., etc. Given the assembly full trust, etc. Still no luck.
Has ANYONE actually got this to work? Crystal reports was a pain, but
at least it worked!
Thanks for any help with this.
FabioIt sounds like you did not explicitly assert permissions to open a database
connection. Unless you assert (!) the permission explicitly, it will fail
with a security exception. Example for opening a connection to a SQL Server
in custom code / custom assemblies:
...
SqlClientPermission permission = new
SqlClientPermission(PermissionState.Unrestricted);
try
{
permission.Assert(); // Assert security permission !!!
SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection("...");
conn.Open();
...
}
BTW: you don't need FullTrust for using the SqlClient in a custom assembly,
because the SqlClient is enabled for partial trust scenarios. Just check the
MSDN documentation on the SqlClientPermission class.

I am explicity asserting permissions. Here's the code I'm using. Am I
missing something?
Try
Dim permission As New
SqlClientPermission(Security.Permissions.PermissionState.Unrestricted)
permission.Assert()
'Use the MS data access app block to get the data reader
dr = _myDBAccess.ExecuteReader(_myConn,
CommandType.StoredProcedure, "Trader_GetTransByAssetID", New
SqlParameter("@.AssetID", nAssetID))
'Loop thru all transactions to build arraylist of
transaction objects
While (dr.Read())
objTrans = New Transaction(dr.GetInt32(COL_TRANSID),
dr.GetDateTime(COL_TRADEDATE), dr.GetSqlMoney(COL_DOLLARS).ToDouble,
sShareClass, 0.0, dr.GetSqlDecimal(COL_SHARES).ToDouble,
dr.GetSqlDecimal(COL_PRICE).ToDouble,
CType(dr.GetSqlInt16(COL_CALCSHAREBALANCE).ToString, Integer),
CType(dr.GetSqlInt16(COL_CALCCOSTBASIS).ToString, Integer))
arlTrans.Add(objTrans)
End While
Catch ex As Exception
_myErrorMessage += " Error in method
CDSC.BuildTransArray - " & ex.Message
Finally
'Clean Up
If Not (IsNothing(dr)) Then
dr.Close()
End If
End Try
Thanks for your help.|||OK, got it fixed.
You have to explicitly open the connection everywhere you use this. So,
we've got it added to every function/procedure within our assembly.
So not oly are we using the ExecuteReader, but we're opening the
connection each time as well.|||I have a similar problem, could you please give some example on this. when
you say
> So not oly are we using the ExecuteReader, but we're opening the
> connection each time as well.
do you mean you declare explicitly
Dim cn as sqlconnection = new sqlconnection(connectionstring)
after sqlclientpermission
From your example,
Try
Dim permission As New
SqlClientPermission(Security.Permissions.PermissionState.Unrestricted)
permission.Assert()
-----
' Dim _myConn as sqlconnection = new sqlconnection(connectionstring)
(adding this solved your issue?)
----
'Use the MS data access app block to get the data reader
dr = _myDBAccess.ExecuteReader(_myConn,
CommandType.StoredProcedure, "Trader_GetTransByAssetID", New
SqlParameter("@.AssetID", nAssetID
Appreciate your help on this.

Production Report against OLAP database
against our OLTP database (SQL Server).
Instead of reports running against OLTP database I would like to create
Cubes and create production reports against them.
Is it possible to do that? Are there any client applications which allows to
create these types of reports? We don't need real time information.
Any help is greatly appreciated."Atul Mehta" <amehta@.oaktreecap.com> schrieb im Newsbeitrag

Atul, you don't necessarily need another Reporting Tool. You need to decide
where you want to build your -> Data Warehouse or -> Data Mart in.
Regards,
Joerg|||If you're looking for cheap and easy, office web components (pivot tables),
or cheap and tedious: ASP web pages and PTS. You might want to see if MSFT
Reporting Services is a potential solution for you.
Another option is to build a star schema reporting database, which will be
useful for building cubes as well, but may eliminate the need.

Production experience to share
time.
Yesterday we deployed our latest release of reports - someone forgot to move
the pin on the report in source control and yet the updated stored proc for
the report went out. Net result was the updated stored proc was out there
but the report wasn't. The new stored proc was requesting a new parameter
the report couldn't supply. Normally on our dev box we get the error message
back from reporting services rather quickly (~3 seconds). On our test box it
was taking 3 minutes and production was just hanging.
We are using C# to proxy all report requests (so nobody can hit the box
directly) and the error codes being returned to C# were basically saying that
reporting services was abruptly cutting the connection. We received Denial
of Service Attach messages, Tls errors, SSL/Tls trust errors and timeout
errors. Nothing returned about missing parameters - the exception object
doesn't receive detailed info as to why the connection was killed - only that
it was killed. In order to get the details we will have to modify the code
to go into the HTML returned by the WebRequest object.
I don't know why the report was hanging for as long as it was- I went into
the IIS logs to see what was being requested (fortunately we have to use URL
requests in our case) and when picking through the requests I noticed that it
wasn't passing in a required parameter. (The report didn't request it, so it
didn't pass it). When I recreated the request through report manager I
noticed that it wasn't using all of the parameters expected.
In our attempts we upped the MaxReqPerUser property in RSReportServer.config
file from default (20) to 140 as a guess - it helped for about 5 minutes,
then everybody crashed again.
Microsoft - hopefully the new RS release will interrogate the stored proc at
runtime and return results quicker? Hopefully error integration will be
better with C# next year? I doubt it b/c there may not be a good way to pass
errors to the exception object.
I am sharing this b/c I was on the phone with MS premier support ($$)
yesterday for 7 hours and they offered no creative ideas or really anything
of signifigance. Please add this to your knowledge base so the next guy
might avoid 12 hours of headache.
Any comments are welcomed!

Producing reports on a web page
reading up on MS SQL Reporting Services and from what I can see they offer a
report repository as well as a a web based portal for downloading the reports.
The company I work for is currently using the following:
â?¢ Webserver running IIS
â?¢ SQL Server 2000
â?¢ Coldfusion MX 7.0 Server
â?¢ Crystal Enterprise Server 10.0
The current set-up we have is to produce the report in a web page (not
necessarily through a proprietary portal or anything like that).
Crystal Reports no longer supports this functionality in version 11. Does
anyone here know if it's possible for me to be able to create and produce a
report and then display it on a web page using Cold Fusion? This would
include being able to create a subreport and passing it parameters with
stored procedures.
Thanks!
ToddNot sure how Cold Fusion works but there are two ways you can integrate with
Report Services (assuming you are not using the Portal it ships with). One
is to use URL integration and the other is web services. With VS 2005 there
are two new controls (webform and winform) that integrate with RS 2005 using
webservices. Very good and very tight integration. They require 2.0
framework.

This is how they currently do it:
Can you tell me if it is at all possible to do this with Microsoft Reporting
services? They are asking me to do the research and find out if MS SQL is a
viable solution.
-----
This document has been created demonstrating how we use Crystal Reports in
real life for reporting. It would be great if Cold Fusion reports could
produce the same result in the near future. Not only would it relive us of
many yearly fees from Business Objects, but it would rededicate our future to
ColdFusion and Macromedia/Adobe.
We currently use Crystal Reports Developer 10 and XI to develop reports that
get generated and displayed in our software on the fly. This software is
driven by ColdFusion MX 7.0. The reports are built upon stored procedures
that accept variables and produce different results.
Crystal Developer lets you browse the available stored procedures and select
the one you would like to use:
After you select which stored procedure you would like to use, the next
screen automatically asks you for some sample data to pass to the SP
variables:
Once the report has been attached to the stored procedure, the rest is just
creating the report. The field explorer on the shows which fields are
available from the stored procedure:
Fields are dragged on and the report is saved. Displaying the report can be
done by using some simple javascript. So we have the flexibility to have
whatever we want on the screen, and the report to be â'embeddedâ' in our
application.
We created a header and a footer to wrap around the parameters because those
donâ't change.
In our attempts to move over to the early version of ColdFusion reports,
this process has been real clumsy. The stored procedures donâ't show up on
the database browser and the only way we can get them to execute is using the
exec <stored procedure> in the query window. You can forget about passing
variables to it. It would be great if a similar process could be duplicated
with ColdFusion reports.
Thanks!!!

this is not happening by an end user is it?
What you would do with RS is to create the report using your stored
procedures. SP are fully supported as long as the SP returns a single
resultset. Multiple resultsets are not supported. Once you have the report
working then you use either URL integration or webservices and integrate it
with your web pages.

I assume you know Cold fussion ? Does cold fusion, uses web services,
if yes, you can easily..integrate the way of reporting services or crystal
report
to be see in ur portal.
Why crystal report is not supported in the web in Version 11'who said this

Proclarity reports
Hi, all
Thank you very much for your kind attention.
I encountered a problem with Export ProClarity reports. The problem is: under the 'Export' option, there is not 'Export to business reporter'. Other options like: 'Export to reporting service', 'Export to PowerPoint', 'Export to outlook' are available.
Can someone please tell me what the issue is.
Thanks in advance,
Mita
This is an separate option on the install page for ProClarity Professional. Have a look at the startpage when you install professional.

Proclarity analytic Views without using sharepoint
Hi All,
May I know there is any way to show the proclarity analytic views or reports in a web portal without using sharepoint server?
If there is no way, can u brief me how to create proclarity analytic views and how to show those views in web portal ( browser) by using sharepoint server?
What kind and what version of SSAS , proclarity , and Sharepoint do I need to use?
I have no experience in BI tools and Data Warehouse.
I am very interested in that field.

Hello! In ProClarity Analytics 6.3 you have both the windows client(Professional), the thin webb client(Analytics Server) and a dashboard server. The two servers do not need Sharepoint, only IIS6.

ProClarity - active vs static presentation
Hi,
When I export the reports in my book to powerpoint, the presentation become actice. How do I change this to a static one?
Hello! The export wizard is designed for interactivity with the cube. I do not think that this is a feature that will be supported in ProClarity's last release(6.3)
Copy/Paste or Screendumps from ProClarity Professional to Powerpoint can work.
You can export from ProClarity's thin web client to Excel and Outlook but I am not sure about the export to PowerPoint.

Processing Time
Hi,
I am verifying my reports processing time. I get the information from the Reporting Service DB - [ExecutionLogs] table. I have the following information:
[TimeEnd] – time that reports generation ends.
[TimeStart] - time that reports generation starts.
[TimeDataRetrieval] - amount of time spent running the data sources.
[TimeProcessing] - time spent processing the report.
[TimeRendering] - time spent generating the output format.
If this information is correct the following statement should be true:
([TimeEnd] - [TimeStart]) = ([TimeDataRetrieval] + [TimeProcessing] + [TimeRendering])
But it isn't, ([TimeEnd] - [TimeStart]) is always bigger then ([TimeDataRetrieval] + [TimeProcessing] + [TimeRendering]).
Why does this happen?
Regards,
Rodrigo
That's interesting. I've never looked to check that. Are you seeing a big difference? how much is it a % of total execution time?
I suspect that TimeDataRetrieval, TimeProcessing, TimeRendering are each recorded by the subsystem resposible for each of those. I would expect there to be a small amount of overhead for the engine to do it's stuff and transition between the various phases between start and end.
|||I have the following results for different reports:
End-Start
(ms)
Sum
(ms)
%
The first column is ([TimeEnd] - [TimeStart])
The second column is ([TimeDataRetrieval] + [TimeProcessing] + [TimeRendering])
How can i find the cause of this difference ?
Regards,
Rodrigo
|||The difference is consistently large, too large. From your observations i.e. looking at the screen with a stopwatch, which is the "more correct" value?
|||Do the reports have multiple datasets?
If multiple datasets are present and transactions are not used, SSRS will execute dataset queries in parallel. However, since there is only one data retrieval value in the execution log, it will pick the time of the longest data retrieval thread.
In addition, time data retrieval + processing + rendering does not cover all the time between the start and the end time of the request. Generally however, the other operations performed should just be small fraction compared to ([TimeDataRetrieval] + [TimeProcessing] + [TimeRendering]).

Processing a new report before printing
I am running SSRS 2005, rendering reports locally using a report viewer. Rather than direct the viewer to an .rdlc file, I use an XMLDocument. A few of my reports have a large image in the background that needs to be invisible when the report prints. This was straightforward - I just use a report parameter and set the visible state of the image to the value of the parameter. The hard part is getting the report to print without an error.
Initially, I render the report with the following code:
Private Sub ShowReport()
Try
With Me.ReportViewer1
.Reset()
.ProcessingMode = Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.ProcessingMode.Local
.LocalReport.LoadReportDefinition(New System.IO.StringReader(_Doc.OuterXml))
.LocalReport.DataSources.Add(_Item1)
.LocalReport.DataSources.Add(_Item2)
.LocalReport.SetParameters(_Param)
.RefreshReport()
End With
Catch ex As Exception
MsgBox(ex.ToString)
End Try
End Sub
This code works fine. I have hidden the print button on the report viewer, and to print, the user must press my button which runs the following code.
Private Sub PrintReport()
Try
_Param(0) = New Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.ReportParameter("ImageVisible", "False")
ShowReport()
ReportViewer1.PrintDialog()
Catch ex As Exception
MsgBox(ex.ToString)
End Try
End Sub
Resetting the parameter and re-displaying the report works fine on its own. The PrintDialog method works fine on its own. When combined in the same Sub like this, I get the following error:
"Operation is not valid due to the current state of the object".
Does anyone know how I could get it to print without an error? I would be very grateful for any help.
Solved it. The problem is caused because the report has not finished rendering when the PrintDialog method is called. I got around it using the RenderingComplete event of the report viewer.

Process Multiple Reports at once?
combinations with different parameters on 5 different schedules, excel output
to a file server. Possibly up to 170 different reports a day so regular
subscription set up would be a nightmare to maintain. I have looked at
Data-Driven subscriptions however what I need is different report
combinations generated not different variations of one report. Something like
this:
Schedule 1
Package 1
Reports A, B, C, D, G (All use same data parameters)
Output to Folder 1
Package 2
Reports B, C, D, E, F
Output to Folder 2
Schedule 2
Package 1...etc.
Is there a way to accomplish this with SSRS, SSIS or SOAP (which I know nada
about) - What is the best process? Subreports are not viable since the
worksheet names cannot be set. (Using 2005)
Any suggestions appreciated.

I know that I've done this sort of thing with Active Reports and Crystal
Reports. When you create 1 report, then a second report, and want to stitch
them together and render as 1 PDF... I haven't come across anything that
pops out in the documentation for RS 2000 that can allow me to do this so
far. Should I be looking at 2005 to accomplish this or is 2000 sufficient?

procedure, report parameters
I have a problem with several multi-dataset reports. I've got several
single-dataset reports working just fine, but these multi-datasets are
problematic. For example, I have one procedure which works w/out parameters,
just returns a statistics report. I have modified the proc to accept a
parameter. If @.ch =1 , give me the first chunk, if @.ch = 2, give me the 2nd
chunk, etc., all the way thru to @.ch=5. All of them together comprise the
whole report. The proc works just fine in query analyzer, like this:
exec procname 1
exec procname 2
exec procname 3
exec procname 4
exec procname 5
now, in RS, i have created 5 datasets. each with the fields returned by
each procedure invocation. mind you, these aren't actual fields, it's select
this as value, select this as count, select this as volume, etc.
the datasets each are Text command types, the query strings are simply
'procname 1', 'procname 2', etc.
all of them work just fine in the Data tab in VS.
in the layout tab, i've created several tables and dragged/dropped the
fields into each accordingly
in the preview tab, i've got data returned in the top two chunks. WOW! cuz
i have been trying this for a very long time, yesterday i had no data at all,
only column headings, i don't know what i changed, but, now i have data in
two chunks, none in the rest. only column headings.
please, can anybody provide some direction on the right way to wrap the
report(s) around procedures like this? remember, the procedures all all just
statisitcal analysis data...no user input is required. i just need to
deliver nicely via email on a scheduled basis.
-- LynnAnd, when I refresh the report (in Preview tab, VS), sometimes all 5 chunks
are there, as desired...but then, I refresh again, and two are blank. (just
the column headings, no data) then, refresh again, and a different two are
blank.
(by 'chunks', i just mean different sections of the report. this particular
report has five different sections...or 'chunks'. each chunk has a
corresponding dataset)
please advise. this is terribly urgent.

designer caches data. Look where your .rdl file is and you will see a
.rdl.data file. Delete it and you will be guaranteed that it will query your
database.

>> -- Lynn|||Hi Bruce. There are no data files there at all. ( I wasn't able to get back
to you sooner, as I had a bit of a family emergency. ) I'm not sure how to
proceed with this. I am looking at the rpt right now through
http://server/reports, it is doing the same thing. First invocation, it had
all chunks of the rpt except for chunk 3. After a refresh, that chunk was
there, too. Two more refreshes, entire resultset is there fine, but then
after another refresh, chunk 4 is now missing/blank.
Another much less urgent question would be subscription scheduling. Can
those things vary at all? Meaning, how can i run it on all production
weekdays, instead of just all weekdays? you know...how do I correctly
account for the holidays?
Please advise.
